Hair porosity describes how readily the hair fibre absorbs and interacts with water. It is strongly influenced by the condition of the cuticle, the protective outer layer made from overlapping cells.
When the cuticle surface is relatively intact and compact, water and products tend to enter more slowly. When the cuticle is weathered, lifted, cracked or partially lost, the strand becomes more permeable and water can move in and out more easily.

The test is popular, but it should not be treated as definitive. Product residue, natural oil, trapped air, surface tension, strand thickness and how the hair is placed in the water can all affect whether it floats or sinks. One strand may also be very different from the rest of your hair.
